On I-Day, partition survivors remember Muslim neighbours who saved their life

Chandigarh, 16 Aug 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: As India celebrates 72nd Independence Day, many families in the border area of Punjab recalled the rare incidents of brotherhood between Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs, and their Muslim neighbours who supported them amidst rampant violence and saved their life. "Our Muslim neighbours in Icchra (Lahore) first protected us and later took pains to locate us in India and send us our household goods", Amar Kaur, one of the few living survivors of the 1947 mayhem, recalled while talking to The Tribune. "When I reached my parental house at Khanpur (Hoshiarpur) after days of travelling on bullock carts, I was amazed to find that my family is protecting the young daughter of a Muslim neighbour", she rememberd. Change names of places associated with Mughals: Giriraj Singh

Patna, 22 Oct 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh on Monday called for change of all names that are associated with Mughals. He appreciated Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s initiative in this direction. He told ANI, “India is a free country today. We are not slaves of the Mughal or the British. Why should we keep names associated with them? Do people of Bihar not know that Khilji looted the state yet Bakhtiarpur is named after him. Names of around 100 places were changed, including Bihar’s Akbarpur. Yogi Ji took a good step. 200 Muslim shanties burnt in Meerut in the name of ‘operation against encroachments’

Meerut, 13 Mar 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: More than 200 homes of Muslims in Macheraan Basti of Meerut district  in Uttar Pradesh were set on fire allegedly by cops during an operation against encroachments in the area. However, the police has alleged the unknown miscreants for heinous act, saying: “Some of the shanties were set on fire by some miscreants when they were trying to evict the encroachers.” Meanwhile, PTI reported that a joint anti-encroachment drive by the Cantonment Board and the local police, coupled with resistance from a mob, left over 150 shanties gutted in the fire and damaged several vehicles in Meerut’s Macheran slum on 7 March.
