Farmers hold ‘chakka jam’ in Bengaluru, other parts of Karnataka against 3 farm laws

Bengaluru, 06 Feb 2021 [Fik/News Sources]: Some roads in Bengaluru on Saturday were blocked temporarily by farmers as part of the nationwide “chakka jam” held by farmer organisations against the three contentious farm laws passed by the Union government, and this led to minor traffic snarls. In Bengaluru, Mysore Bank Circle, Sadahalli Gate, Devanahalli Road, Yelahanka New Police Station Circle saw farmers gathering with green flags and stopping the free flow of traffic. The protest also saw the detention of some of the demonstrators as the police tried to clear the roads for traffic movement. Pro-Kannada leader Vatal Nagaraj, who joined the farmers, was also detained from Mysore Bank Circle.  Other than Bengaluru, farmers across the state held similar traffic blockades on national and state highways to show solidarity

BPL cardholders in Karnataka to get jowar or ragi along with rice from April 1

Bengaluru, 14 Feb 2021 [Fik/News Sources]: BPL cardholders in Karnataka will be given jowar or ragi along with rice through the public distribution system (PDS). The central government has already given its approval for the move, said the minister for food and civil supplies Umesh Katti. Speaking to reporters here in Belagavi on Saturday, Katti said 3 kg jowar or ragi will be distributed along with 2 kg rice to each beneficiary from April 1. The combination of jowar and rice will be distributed in fifteen districts of North Karnataka while the combination of ragi and rice will be distributed in fifteen districts of South Karnataka, he said. "After being given the portfolio, I visited the Union minister in New Delhi and discussed the concept of distributing millets along with rice. This decision will be effective from April 1.

23,558 Karnataka records another big jump in new Covid cases

BENGALURU, 22 Apr 2021 [Fik/News Sources]: The pandemic’s second wave is picking up furiously in Karnataka with the state breaking its own record of highest daily additions in Covid-19 cases, almost on consecutive days. On Wednesday, the state recorded a whopping 23,558 fresh Covid-19 cases after witnessing 21,794 cases on Tuesday.The third highest day’s addition was recorded on April 18, at 19,067 cases. Consequently, the state’s positivity rate has been spiralling, and was at 5.08 per cent on Wednesday. The positivity rate going up is not a good sign, because this is happening despite the increased number of daily tests.
