Bulgaria adopts religious denominations act amendments

SOFIA, 22 Dec 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: The Bulgarian Parliament on Friday adopted an amendment bill on religious denominations that will see an increase in public subsidies for two largest religious communities -- Orthodox Christians and Muslims. Under the amendments in the Religious Denominations Act, the Grand Mufti’s Office will receive an annual support of €3 million (around $3.41 million) from the government.  Celal Faik, the secretary general of the Grand Mufti`s Office, told Anadolu Agency that: "Our lawmakers have accepted the most 'soft' version of the bill, which has been discussed for about three months." EU's strengthened Schengen system enters into force

BRUSSELS, 29 Dec 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: New rules to strengthen Schengen Information System (SIS) of the EU came into force on Friday. The system is widely used to share information for security and border management in Europe. According to a statement by the European Commission, "the upgraded database will help border guards to better monitor who is crossing the EU's borders; support police and law enforcement in capturing dangerous criminals and terrorists; and offer greater protection for missing children and vulnerable adults, in line with the new data protection rules". The system will be able to alert the children who are at risk of abduction and vulnerable persons who are denied the right to travel for their own security – such as forced marriage, suspicion of human trafficking. Afghanistan: Historic Lapis convoy back from first trip

KABUL, 19 Feb 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: A landmark trade convoy linking landlocked Afghanistan to Turkey along the historic Lapis Lazuli route returned on Monday, successfully bringing back medicine, solar panels, and oil. Starting in Afghanistan’s northern Faryab province, the resurrected route goes through Turkmenistan, passes the Caspian Sea, and goes through Azerbaijan and Georgia to reach the Turkish cities of Kars and Istanbul and finally ends in Europe. Herat Governor Abdul Qayum Rahimi welcomed back the convoy of cargo trucks. He said technical and logistical glitches have been noted to deal with on future trips.
