Libya declares state of emergency in Sirte

TRIPOLI, 11 Mar 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: Libya's UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli declared a state of emergency and mobilization in the north-central city of Sirte. The decision came after forces of east Libya-based commander Khalifa Haftar, known as the Libyan National Army, reportedly move forward to the southern outskirt of the city. All troops of the militia connected to the UN-backed unity government were called to duty, said a statement from the security and protection force in Sirte, affiliated to the GNA. “Any attack on the city will mean a declaration of war and its consequences will turn into a disaster,” said the statement, adding that Haftar’s forces took provocative steps recurrently. UN employee detained upon arrival in Tunisia

TUNIS, 31 Mar 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: A UN employee was taken into custody by the local authorities upon his arrival in Tunisia earlier this week, according to the world body’s office in Tunis.  In a Friday statement, the office said it was in contact with the Tunisian authorities with a view to ascertaining the reasons for the detention of its employee, who it identified as Moncef Kartas. “UN experts and those on mission, like Kartas, enjoy immunity and are covered by the Conventions on the Privileges and Immunities of the UN,” the statement read. Egypt leader shows support for 'Sudanese people's will'

ANKARA, 16 Apr 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: In his first statements on last week’s military coup in Sudan, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi expressed his support for the “will of the Sudanese people”. In a phone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, al-Sisi said Egypt was “closely following” developments in Sudan, according to statements by an al-Sisi spokesman cited by news website Russia Today.
