Turkey launches counter-terror operation in north Iraq

ANKARA, 28 May 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: The Turkish Armed Forces launched a counter-terrorism operation in Hakurk, northern Iraq, according to a statement by Turkish National Defense Ministry on Tuesday. The military offensive initiated on Monday aims to neutralize terrorists in the area. The offensive began with artillery shelling and continued with airstrikes and commando operations.  Airstrikes destroyed weapons positions, shelters, caves and ammunition depots used by the terrorists, with support from combat drones. The Ministry underlined that the operation was ongoing, as planned. Iran says Trump’s strike claim ‘untrue’

TEHRAN, 23 June 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: Iran on Saturday described as “untrue” U.S. President Donald Trump’s talk about calling off a retaliatory strike against Iranian targets due to the high number of casualties.   Trump said Friday he called off a retaliatory strike on Iranian targets that would have killed 150 people, calling it a disproportionate response to the downing of an American drone earlier this week.   “Trump’s allegation about calling off the strike on Iran at the last moment because of the number of casualties was untrue,” Parvez Ismaili, assistant head of Relations Office of Iran’s Presidency, said on Twitter.   He said the opposition of regional allies could be one reason of calling off the strike, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

Israel to build 2,304 settlement units in West Bank

JERUSALEM, 07 August 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: Israel has advanced plans to build 2,304 settlement units in the occupied West Bank, according to Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper on Wednesday.  The plans were approved by the High Planning Committee of the Israeli Civil Administration, a body responsible for authorizing settlement building.  According to the newspaper, some of the new units will be built in illegal outposts, thus formally granting them the state’s approval.  Israeli NGO Peace Now decried the new construction plans as a “disastrous government policy” to undermine the two-state solution.  “The linkage of thousands of housing permits for settlers and a negligible number of housing units for Palestinians cannot hide the government’s discrimination policy,” the Tel
