Philippine president 'hopeful' over upcoming referendum

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte expressed confidence Friday that a plebiscite would pass on the ratification of a law expected to bring greater autonomy to the predominantly Muslim southern regions of the archipelago. According to local reports, Duterte said in a speech there was “every reason” to believe the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) would pass. Voting is set to begin on Jan. 21 in two cities, with a second round to be held on Feb. 6 in other areas in the neighboring region. Pakistan: Ex-premier barred from traveling abroad

KARACHI, 06 Feb 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: Pakistani authorities have barred a former premier facing trial in a multimillion dollar corruption case from traveling abroad, local media reported. Gilani’s name has been placed on a no-fly list -- commonly known as Exit Control List -- which means he cannot travel abroad without government permission. A federal anti-corruption court in the southern port city of Karachi last year indicted Gilani -- who is also vice chair of the opposition Pakistan People Party (PPP) -- and 25 other government officials for misuse of authority and their alleged involvement in approving

ANKARA, 10 Apr 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: If the U.S. refuses to sell Patriot missiles to Turkey, it could buy more Russian S-400 missiles or other air defense systems, according to Turkey's foreign minister. Speaking to news channel NTV on Wednesday, Mevlut Cavusoglu hit back at U.S. criticisms of the S-400 purchase, saying that some NATO countries already have earlier generation S-300 missiles but this does not conflict with their NATO membership. "If the U.S. refuses to sell us Patriots, tomorrow we could buy a second S-400, or another air defense system," he said. Rebuffing U.S. threats to cancel a deal for F-35 jets if the S-400s are delivered, Cavusoglu said in the absence of F-35s, Turkey could buy fighters jets from another source until it is able to produce its own. Washington has balked at Turkey's
