Erdogan, Merkel to meet amid tensions, protests

It will be Erdogan’s first official visit to Germany since becoming president in 2014, and follows a prolonged bout of tensions sparked by Berlin’s criticism of his crackdown on opponents in the wake of a failed 2016 coup. “The main goal of this visit is to completely leave behind this period (of tensions),” Erdogan told Turkish media. Top US court rejects Trump bid to enforce asylum rules

WASHINGTON, 22 Dec 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a request from the Trump administration to reinstate restrictions that would bar migrants who illegally cross into the U.S. from claiming asylum.  Four of the court's nine justices -- Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh -- would have allowed the practice to go into effect, according to a brief two- sentence order that did not elaborate on the decision.  Justice John Roberts joined with the Supreme Court's four liberal justices in denying a stay in a lower court's ruling halting the asylum restrictions.  Trump has taken a hardline approach to both legal and illegal immigration since assuming office, citing alleged national security concerns.  He issued a proclamation on Nov. 9 seeking to limit

Powerful earthquake strikes southern Philippines

ANKARA/ BEIJING/ JAKARTA, 29 Dec 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: A major 7-magnitude earthquake rattled the southern Philippine island of Mindanao early Saturday, according to reports.   The quake struck southeast of Davao City at a depth of 59 kilometers (36 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).   The USGS first said the magnitude of the quake was 6.9 but later revised it to 7.   No initial causalities or damage was reported. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami warning for parts of the Philippines and Indonesia. But later, the center said that the tsunami alert was withdrawn.
