Trump raises China tariffs as trade war escalates
WASHINGTON, 24 August 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that he will boost tariffs on $550 billion worth of Chinese imports in the latest escalation of the trade war between Washington and Beijing. The move follows China's announcement earlier in the day that it would impose tariffs of 5% or 10% on $75 billion of U.S. goods and reinstate duties on American cars. The tariffs will take effect in two batches on Sept.1 and Dec. 15. "China should not have put new Tariffs on 75 BILLION DOLLARS of United States product (politically motivated!)", Trump said on Twitter in an official statement announcing the tariffs. Indonesia: Death toll rises to 23 in Papua riots
JAKARTA, 24 Sep 2019 [Fik/News Sources]: Monday’s fresh riots left at least 23 people killed and 77 others injured in Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua, police said on Tuesday. The riots were triggered by a report about a teacher’s racist remarks towards his students, which was later confirmed by police as a fake report. "The alleged perpetrators are from the West Papua National Committee (KNPB), the masterminds of the riots in Wamena," police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo told Anadolu Agency Tuesday. The KNPB is a pro-independence group in Papua. Prasetyo said the Papua issue would be brought to the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.
