Puttur: Areca prices to rise to Rs 350/kg as supply is low

Puttur, 17 June 2020 [Fik/News Sources]: As the demand for areca is rising in Mangaluru nut market and the supply is low, the price of the nut is expected to rise to Rs 350 per kilogram. Due to diseases and adverse weather, areca crops in southern India was affected. This has led to lower stockpiles in northern India and increased demand. In addition, the ban on the import and the lockdown effect has also played a role in the price rise. Foreign returnees contribute to rise in COVID-19 infections in DK

Udupi, 28 June 2020 [Fik/News Sources]: As many as 2,775 stranded Kannadigas from Gulf countries have landed at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) since May 12 and 295 passengers among them have tested positive for Covid-19. It was indeed a sigh of relief for the remaining 2,480 returnees, who had tested negative. In the past 20 days, 1,814 returnees have reached Mangaluru. Muslim man conducts the last rites of a Hindu

Padubidri, 26 July 2020 [Fik/News Sources]: When family members refused to conduct the last rites of an elderly man from the Brahmin community, a social worker from the Muslim community conducted the last rites as per the Hindu rituals. Venugopal Rao (62), a resident of Padubidri Brahmastana in Udupi district, had died on Thursday. The deceased was unmarried but had siblings. However, none of them came forward to perform the last rites and even did not attend the funeral. Asif who conducted the final rites had seen Rao suffering from mental illness near Padubidri temple a few years ago. Rao was later admitted to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru.
