ANKARA, 23 May 2020 [Fik/News Sources]: Coronavirus cases in Oman have almost doubled in the past 10 days, reaching close to 6,800 on Friday.
The country’s Health Ministry said 424 more people – the week's highest figure – tested positive for COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 6,794.
The number marks a rise of more than 3,000 since May 12, when the overall count stood at 3,721.
The ministry also confirmed two more fatalities on Friday, which raised Oman’s death toll to 32.
A total of 1,821 patients have recovered in the country since it confirmed the first COVID-19 case on Feb. 24, according to the ministry.
Despite the recent spike in cases, Oman still has one of the lowest case count in the region.
Saudi Arabia is the worst-hit country in the area with over 65,000 cases, followed by Qatar with nearly 40,000 and the UAE with close to 27,000 cases.
More than 5.12 million cases have been reported in 188 countries and regions since the virus emerged in China last December.
The US, Europe, and Russia are currently the world’s worst-hit regions.
The global death toll is close to 333,500, while recoveries exceed 1.96 million, according to data compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
