New Delhi, 28 April 2022 [Fik/News Sources]: After Supreme Court’s warning, police in Uttarakhand came into action and thwarted a controversial Dharam Sansad scheduled to be held in Jalalpur village of Roorkee by imposing section 144 and detained the people having connection with the event.

On Tuesday, The Supreme Court expressed concern at state governments for not doing enough to prevent hate speeches while grilling the Uttarakhand government on the proposed Dharam Sansad in Roorkee.

“We direct the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand to state the corrective measures taken by the authorities before next date of hearing,” said the court in its order.

Following the court order, the administration in Roorkee enforced section 144 in the village where the event was to take place and detained 33 people associated with organising of the event.

“Thirty-three people associated with organising of the event have been detained to prevent the ‘mahapanchayat’ from taking place. Those detained include Kali Sena’s state convenor Dineshanand Bharti who had given a call for holding the event and his six supporters,” SSP Yogendra Singh Rawat was quoted by NDTV as saying.

Swami Anand Swaroop, one of the organisers of Dharam Sansad, reached Roorkee for the event even though section 144 was in force and a large number of security forces were deployed. He said he was put under house arrest in Roorkee.

Swami Dishanand Bharti, who is also among the organizers, was arrested by the police.

Reacting to the police action, Swaroop claimed that the police are taking action against them under the pressure from Muslim community.

“Till when you can stop us? Impotent Hindu society is still sleeping and their sant is fighting,” he said in a video message.

About the security arrangements to thwart the event, PL Shah, Additional District Magistrate of Haridwar said, “Around 200 police personnel, 100 inspectors and sub-inspectors and five companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary have been deployed in the area. Me and my colleagues, including two SDM, are going to be on vigil in this area.”

The event wasbeing organised soon after the village witnessed anti-Muslim communal violence during Hanuman Jayanti procession this month. Muslim families had to flee the village after armed mobs took out procession on 16 April.

Earlier, a Dharam Sansad organised in Haridwar had drawn a lot of outrage for an open call for violence against Muslims given by several speakers during the event. A petition was filed against the event in the Supreme Court. Later, the police arrested Narsinganand in connection with hate speech he had given at Haridwar Dharam sansad.
