Karwar, 03 Apr 2021 [Fik/News Sources]: Two Fast Patrol vessels joined the Indian Coast Guard of Karwar Division. The Indian Coast Guard (ICGS) Karwar division has jurisdiction over the coast of the Uttara Kannada district, from northern Majali to southern Bhatkal. ICGS has been operating with 2 interceptor boats and 2 interceptor crafts since its launch in the district on 04 November 2009.
Since April, ICGS has deployed two fast patrol ships - ICGS Savitribai Phule and ICGS Kasturba Gandhi. Both ships were previously operating in New Mangalore Port.
Both ships are Fast Patrol Ships (FPV) built by Goa Shipyard Limited. These are equipped with the latest satellite communications and navigation systems. The ships are designed for surveillance, patrol, and are capable of shallow water operations. Both FPVs are also capable of anti-trafficking, anti-piracy patrols, fisheries protection, and search and rescue operations.
In addition, the fishermen at sea have been assisted by these. These two FPVs add a new dimension to the Coast Guard Station's capabilities.
