Kundapur, 16 Jan 2021 [Fik/News Sources]: Residents near Maravanthe beach are demanding T-shaped breakwaters similar to that built at the beach to be built across the coast here.

The coastal area around the beach is prone to sea erosion. A concrete road built recently is already under threat from extending sea waves.

T-shaped breakwaters were built on the beach at Maravanthe a few years ago resulting in reduced sea erosion and allowed easy access to the beach and sea view for tourists.

In the fishing harbour area, a Kerala-model outer harbour is under construction. The northern part of 260 metres is being in the first phase while the southern part will be of 525 metres totalling 785 metres.

In the second phase, a barrier wall totalling 625 metres on the northern and southern side of the harbour will be built later.

The locals had appealed to Ministers Basavaraj Bommai, Kota Srinivas Poojary and Byndoor MLA BM Sukumar Shetty for the breakwaters here. The MLAs had promised to approve a plan for it soon.

“Every year during the monsoon season mass sea erosion occurs. Shore dwellers spend all their days in anxiety due to this. The newly constructed concrete road is also at risk. The construction of T-shaped breakwaters can prevent the erosion and also benefit tourists who visit the beach,” said Sanjeev Kharvi a Maravanthe resident.
