Karwar: New fish market can accommodate 170 sellers

Karwar, 17 August 2020 [Fik/News Sources]: District In-charge Minister Shivaram Hebbar has appealed to the nine shopkeepers, who have approached the court against the second phase work of fish market in Karwar, to withdraw their plea in another week’s time and extend co-operation to the government.

Speaking after inaugurating the new building of the fish market near Gandhi Market in Karwar on Saturday, Hebbar said, these nine shopkeepers will get a stall each in the new building if they withdraw their application. This has been conveyed to the court in writing. He added that the government was ready to rectify its mistake and would not want to become stubborn.

“There is a proposal to facilitate 500 women to sell fish at the fish market. Funds of Rs five crore for this is also available. But, due to the selfishness of a few, several poor fish sellers and even customers are facing inconvenience,” he added.

MLA Roopali Naik too appealed the shopkeepers to co-operate.

Three more fish markets

She informed that the modern fish markets will be developed in three corners of Karwar using the MLA development funds. While the first two will be at Chittakula and Amdalli, the third one will be at Shirwad or Nandangadda, she added.

ZP President Jayashri Moger, Deputy Commissioner Harishkumar, SP Shivaprakash Devaraju, Additional DC H K Krishnamurthy, and others were present.

9,000 sq metre area

The new fish market is spread over 9,000 sq metres, and has been constructed at a cost of Rs 4.96 crore. In the first phase, it can accommodate 170 fish sellers, and in the days to come, it will be developed to accommodate 500 fish sellers.
