Today 39, Covid cases in upward mode in U-K dist

Karwar, 11 July 2020 [Fik/News Sources]:  The number of Covid-19 cases in Uttara Kannada district has been in an upward mode for the last few days. Even on Saturday, the district recorded 39 fresh cases with a 25 of them reported in Sirsi taluk.

On Friday 33 fresh cases which includes Mundgod, 11 people who came in primary contact with P-23,158 have been infected and in Haliyal, all the eight patients had come in contact with P-23,163.

The source of infection of six of the 10 patients in Karwar and another 80-year-old woman in Honnavar is still being traced. While one patient has travel history to Europe, others have come from Mangaluru and Bengaluru.

Even on Friday, a 25-year-old woman from Karwar and 28-year-old woman from Sirsi working with the Health Department tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, another person in Uttara Kannada District also succumbed to the virus who was being treated at the KIMS in Karwar. With this the toll in Karwar Districct has also climbed up to 3.

On Thursday night, a 71-year-old woman from Hotegali village under treatment at KIMS in Karwar died of Covid-19. The woman was having kidney problem and had returned to Karwar after treatment in Mangaluru. As her health deteriorated, she was shifted to the district hospital ICU and since she had fever, her swab sample was sent for testing. When she tested positive, she was shifted to the Covid Ward in KIMS. Though she was put on ventilator, she succumbed to the treatment.

When the body of the woman was taken to the graveyard near the High Church in Karwar, some people opposed it. Though the officers tried to convince them, the people did not budge. At last, the last rites were held there under police protection.

Meanwhile, some members of the City Municipal Council and others submitted a memorandum to the district administration asking it to ensure that the last rites of persons who die of Covid are held in the forest areas in Karwar taluk.

No entry to tourist spots

In wake of rising Covid cases, entry to tourists to spots like Magod, Satodi waterfalls and Jenukallgudda in Yellapur taluk has been prohibited.

Dist hospital being sanitised

As five people including staff members of Karwar district hospital have tested positive for Covid-19, the district hospital would be sanitised on July 11 and 12 and so, the hospital would be partially closed for public on these two days. No OPD services would be available. Only emergency and maternity departments would be open, informed District Surgeon Shivanand Kudtalkar.
