New Delhi, 20 Feb 2020 [Fik/News Sources]: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) National Secretary Malik Mohtasim Khan, here on Wednesday, accused the UP Police of being vindictive against the anti-CAA/NRC agitators and demanded that all cases against protestors lodged in UP jails be dropped immediately.
Khan said this after visiting Maulana Tahir Madani, General Secretary, Rashtriya Ulema Council, and 18 others with a delegation of Muslim leaders in the Azamgarh jail on Monday.
“We found that some of those in jail were students and mere bystanders. Even Madani had gone to the protest site to talk to the women agitators to diffuse the tension and prevent any untoward incident. But the UP Police arrested Madani and slapped serious charges on him,” Khan said.
Pointing out that the police detain protestors for few hours to prevent possible deterioration of the law and order, the JIH office-bearers accused the UP Police of acting in a strange manner by imprisoning them and slapping cases on them.
The JIH condemned the UP Police”s action in Bilariyaganj town, Azamgarh, where the women protestors were subjected to baton charge and tear gas shells.
A dedicated legal team is trying to secure early release of Madani and others. The JIH has demanded that the police drop all charges by February 25.
