Haveri youth nabbed for killing, raping cousin

Haveri, 12 Aug 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: The Haveri Rural Police have arrested a 28-year-old man for the alleged rape of his 17-year-old cousin after murdering her.

The victim, Sharda's partially burnt body was recovered near a bridge some 14km away from Haveri on Thursday. Autopsy reports revealed that the girl had been sexually assaulted after she was killed.

The victim's father had approached the police to file a missing complaint on August 7, a day after Sharda did not return having left home for her college located in Haveri city. The arrested Manajangouda had even tried to mislead the police investigating the case on the pretext of helping them.

However, the police became suspicious of Manajangouda when they found that he had given them false leads in the case and arrested him for questioning.

It was during the interrogation that Manajangouda confessed to having taken Sharda to his sister's house after offering to drop her at college on the fateful day. Here he tried to rape Sharda but as she seemed to resist his advances, he assaulted her on the head and raped her after she fell unconscious. Later he suffocated her to death and poured acid on the upper half of her body before dumping her dead body near Varadahalli Varada river bridge.

A case of rape, murder and destruction of evidence has been registered against Manjanagouda.
