Udupi: Four child labourers from West Bengal working as goldsmiths rescued

Udupi, 18 July 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: Four child labourers have been rescued by the Department of Labour and the Department of Women and Child Welfare Udupi officials following complaints by the locals here on Wednesday July 18.

The children hailing from West Bengal were working as goldsmiths in a building near Chittaranjan Circle in Udupi.

The children have been sent to the custody of district child welfare committee.

During the raid it was revealed that more than 15 people who hail from West Bengal are running businesses without trade licences.

A report regarding the same will be submitted to the DC soon.

The raid was carried out by Ramamurthy SS, labour inspector, Prabhakar Acharya, director of women and child welfare committee, Praveen Kumar, labour department official and the team.

It is said that some chemicals used by these goldsmiths to melt the gold is dangerous for the health of child labourers when they are exposed to it for longer hours.
