Aligarh, 06 May 2018 [Fik/News Sources]: A magisterial inquiry has been ordered in connection with the violence over Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait that hung in Aligarh Muslim University campus, officials said. The probe would be conducted by the additional district magistrate, Bachhu Singh, whose report to be submitted within 15 days.

Singh told Times of India the inquiry will find out how the Hindu right-wing activists reached AMU gates the second time and why no action was taken by the police to resist them. The inquiry will also ascertain as to why no FIR was registered against them.

Internet had remained suspended in Aligarh from Friday evening to Saturday mid-night due to communal flare-up. The city witnessed a clash on Thursday between students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and the police over.

“There were so many messages coming on social media which were creating a negative effect on communal harmony. Keeping that in mind, the district magistrate of the area has imposed section 144 of CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure),” said Aligarh Additional District Magistrate Shyam Bahadur.

Talking to TOI, president of Students’ union, Mashkoor Ahmad Usmani said, “Resistance will continue till a judicial inquiry is marked into the incident and the culprits arrested”. The AMU Teachers’ Association (AMUTA) has also sent a memorandum to President of India, Ram Nath Kovind asking him to “urgently institute” a high-level judicial probe into the incident.
