Ghulam Ahmad Murtaza, a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and Secretary of Burdawan based Jamia Islamiia Madinatul Uloom, spoke on “The Prophet (PBUH): A Messenger of Peace and Harmony”. Maulana Abu Talib Rahmani, another Kolkata based member of AIMPLB will speak on the topic  “Talaq in Islamic Jurisprudence” in the context of the ongoing debate on the issue. He said that a canard is being spread against Muslims on the false pretext of triple talaq although data shows that the divorce rates among Muslims are quite low.

Maulana Rahmani also criticized the media for spreading fabricated and biased stories where they invite “brokers who learn about Islam from social media” and give provocative bites.

Noted religious scholar and public speaker Maulana Ataur Rahman Mazarbhuiya, former MLA from Assam also a member of the AIMPLB, was the last speaker who delivered a lecture on the “Concept of Education in Islam.”

He reminded the audience that the first word that was revealed to the Prophet of Islam was  Iqra (read), adding that it is incumbent upon Muslims to seek education. He said that the Prophet equally stressed on the education of girls and had in fact fixed Wednesday to impart lessons to women himself.

He also reminded of the role of Ayesha and Hafsha, wives of the Prophet and Fatima, his daughter, in collecting Hadiths and teaching them. Stressing on the importance of education for girl child he said that educating girls to become doctors or experts in other fields should be encouraged.

Dr Md. Maseehur Rehman, Head of the Department of Arabic, and convener of the program, meanwhile stressed on the importance of modern education in Islam. Quoting government data that shows an abysmally low number of schools in Muslim dominated areas, he said that no doubt there should be mosques, but we also need to open schools and educate our children in modern education.

All lectures were followed by lively discussions with students. The program was jointly organized by students and teachers of the Park Circus Campus of the University.
